Can a business owner purchase a personal vehicle in the companys name?

I have seen evidence (in the form of service reminders from dealerships) of at least 2 vehicles my boss/owner has purchased that name the business as the owner (and are mailed to the business, not a residence). These are not company vehicles as the company is a non-delivery restaurant and would have no need for them. I suspect that one of the vehicles belongs to the general manager of the restaurant I work at (the general manager also happens to be the owner's sister-in-law) but I have never seen the other vehicle. Is it legal for my boss/owner to purchase these vehicles like this? If so, why would he do it?
